  7. Fox Rent-a-Car - Located primarily in California, Fox Rent-a-Car offers both free mileage and low rates to entice customers away from the bigger companies. They have also recently embraced the hybrid car rental market with Toyota Priuses offered at several of their locations.
  8. National - National Car Rental offers midsize hybrids in most regions of the country at a reasonable price. And where they are unable to offer environmentally beneficial cars, they instead offer charitable contributions to help the cause.
  9. Thrifty - Another less-known rental agency, Thrifty is a company whose marketing strategy is to offer lower prices to the consumers. As such, when San Francisco's airport offered a fifteen-dollar discount to all who rent hybrids, Thrifty was quick to join many other companies in offering those vehicles. Outside of the Bay Area, however, offerings remain slim.

These are just ten of the many rental agencies that are quickly becoming providers of hybrid rental cars. And while the total amount of these vehicles remains at around ten to fifteen percent of all cars offered, there is no doubt that they will continue to grow in popularity.

Save Money on Your Summer Car Rental

When every dollar of savings counts, car rental specials can help save you money on your rental this summer. If you go to company websites you will often see a tab for deals or specials, and they often have their best or current offers advertised right on the home page. Because summer is such a busy travel time and many companies are downsizing their fleets, it's important to plan ahead.

When you're looking to save some cash on weekend or weekly car rentals this summer, you'll want to do some research to make sure that that any available specials or deals will work with the rental that you want to do.

Some weekend and weekly specials are location specific. The offer may only be available at an airport location , some only at off airport or neighborhood locations. Many weekend specials will only be available in certain cities or even at participating locations in certain states.

Make sure that you know exactly what is required to qualify for a weekend rate for the particular car rental company you choose. For some companies you can pick up as early as Thursday, while some will only allow pick up on Friday or a Saturday.

For all weekend car rental deals there will be restrictions about when the vehicle must be returned; generally on Monday. If you return the vehicle later than Monday, you will be charged a higher rate. Most weekend deals will only be offered on certain size or classes of vehicles. Make sure that your vehicle preference is included.

Make sure to verify exactly what is required to qualify for a weekly rate for that particular car rental company. As a general rule, a weekly rental will require a 5 day minimum and usually must include a Saturday night overstay.

Keep in mind that with most weekly deals, the value may only apply to the first week. For example, if you see a special that advertised $35 off a weekly rental and you want to rent a car for 2 weeks, the $35 will only come off once, not for each week. However if the special includes a percentage off a weekly rental, the percentage savings will generally apply to the full period of the rental, as long as the vehicle is returned before the maximum rental period that is specified.

Lastly, make sure to carefully research and read all terms and conditions that are listed with any specials or booking that you make. Verify if there are any blackout dates, advanced booking requirements and don't forget to check the expiration date of a special. For most companies a special or deal will list an expiration date, which will be either when the rental needs to be reserved by or the date by which you must pick up the car.

Remember, if you can't find a car rental special to meet your needs this summer, make sure to check to see if you at least qualify for a car rental discount code from an association or professional membership that will help lower your rate. There are hundreds of programs that offer car rental discounts to their members.

And, as always, do a lot of comparison shopping and book your rental as far in advance as you can!

Rental companies require a few basic things in order to allow you to rent a car. While every rental company is different, there are three common rental vehicle qualifications that you're likely to encounter.

A Minimum Age
Although the minimum age requirement may vary in some areas, 21 years old is the de facto standard minimum age for rental vehicle companies. Proper identification is required to prove your age. Generally speaking, a driver's license will meet this requirement, but some rental companies may want an additional age-related document. Be sure to call ahead and find out the rental company's requirements.

Anyone else who might drive the rental car should also meet the age requirement set forth by the company. An underage friend or family member should never drive the car without the company's authorization, as this may void the insurance cover.

Driving Record
Your driving history does matter in the vehicle rental industry. Some companies may screen your driving record in the approval process. While a driving record screen is becoming easier and easier as technology improves, you will want to allow enough time to complete this process if necessary.

If you've been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, have multiple speeding tickets, or have even been caught for not wearing your seat belt, there is a good chance you will be denied a rental vehicle.

Some companies may allow you sign a confidentiality contract stating that your record is acceptable to their terms. If these companies do a background check on your driving history, and you are caught lying, the rental company can terminate your account. You will have violated the agreement terms.

Credit/Debit Card
Most vehicle rental companies will also require you to provide a credit or debit card in order to rent a vehicle. Some companies will charge a security deposit, while others will simply keep the card on file in case there is a need to charge it for damage to the car or for services such as filling the car with gasoline. When you rent the vehicle, you will typically sign a waiver that allows the rental company to charge that credit or debit card for those damages or services, based on the details of the contract.

Car Rental History

One of the most significant businesses that have marked the 20th century is car-renting. Car rental agencies primarily serve people who have a car that is temporarily out of reach or out of service or travelers who are out of town or owners of damaged or destroyed vehicles who are awaiting repair or insurance compensation.

In USA this business started in 1916 when Joe Saunders from Nebraska started a car renting business with a Ford Model T he owned, renting the car to local and visiting businessmen. By 1925 Saunders had car rental operations in 21 states. By then, The Chrysler Company ran full-page ads boasting that Saunders had purchased $1 million worth of Chrysler automobiles.

Unfortunately in 1930s, during the Great Depression Saunders went bankrupt.

In 1918 Walter L. Jacobs started renting Model T Fords in Chicago and by 1923 his business was grossing over $1 million in annual sales. Later John Hertz, who owned The Yellow Cab and Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company bought the business from Jacobs. General Motors bought out Hertz's Yellow Truck Company in 1926, and named the car renting business as the Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System.

Another major rental car agency, National Car Rental System, was formed in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 27, 1947, by 24 independent car rental operators who hoped to broaden their market influence by teaming together. Among the original founders of the company was, again, Joe Saunders.

In the early 1970s, the industry also moved into the used-car business, selling used rental cars directly to the public.

Increased competition in the rent-a-car industry in the 1970s and 1980s led to price wars and innovative give-away and bonus programs. This competition lead to many companies struggling financially by 1985. Rental car industry was also an effective marketing tool, as millions of potential car buyers were exposed to the newest models from the manufacturers every year.

The Car Rental industry now carries an inventory of about 1.7 million cars in the U.S. market alone (up from about 135,000 cars in 1965), according to Auto Rental News, which aggregates information on public and private car rental companies.

According to 2003 data from rental companies, online bookings have become important for the industry, with 21% of the bookings coming from online agencies and 15% directly from the companies' web sites.

Importance of online bookings is expected to grow further, aided by the ability to compare several rental companies easily online, which should also keep prices in check for the sector in general.
